Storytelling in Business Memoirs Has Incredible Impact Personally and Professionally

By Jeffrey A. Mangus

“What is your story?”

Yesterday, I attended the first week of a new memoir writing class hosted and presented by Chris Epting, one of the world’s best memoir and autobiography ghostwriters.

Dedicated to my profession, I study the writing craft to become a better writer for my authors and myself. The most important thing I learned from the class is that memoirs are about telling a great story. Mr. Epting has had an immense influence on my career. As a member of his class, I am excited to learn all I can to be a better writer and sharpen my memoir writing skills.

After ghostwriting for nine years, I know that storytelling is the crucial element, and for a new author, revealing the truth of those stories requires guts, grit, and tenacity.

Why so?

Memoirs push you to relive those painful moments—the ones that make a difference, the ones that change things and alter your life. When I set out to write my book AMPOSSIBLE, I had to embrace the tragic moment of looking at the sheet on the bed, deflated, empty, and void of the limb I was born with. It was a moment of terror and immense pain, and while writing my book, I had to go back and relive it to bring the authentic story to the page.  It was hard to relive the physical and emotional pain, but on the other side of it, I weaved a powerful narrative that affected those who needed it the most… amputees.

or business leaders, memoirs require exceptional storytelling about personal journeys and successes.  Your memoir should have a captivating narrative that inspires others. Through memoir, it is your time to shine. Take this moment to reflect on your journey and lessons, and tell your life story to inspire others.

People in the business world often underestimate the power of storytelling, especially in a world where facts and figures dominate. Yet, somehow, storytelling has an uncanny way of cutting through the fog and rocking the reader’s world to the core.  Stories should grab us, just as they did when we were kids, and the same is true in business memoirs.

For a business leader, memoir storytelling isn’t about wizards and magical potions. It’s about portraying your brand and reflecting on your company’s value and purpose. It’s all about context. Stories should shake things up, capture attention, and humanize your company’s image and perception of you as a leader, building trust.

As you know, trust is the cornerstone of any successful business relationship. Memoir stories, if done right, build trust by showing vulnerability, authenticity, and commitment to your business and yourself. Readers who relate to your story are more likely to trust your brand and become loyal advocates.

As a ghostwriter, I know the ropes of setting the goal of your memoir. I know how to help you identify the core message you want your reader to walk away with—it is the heart of your story. Working with you, I help you understand your audience and tailor your story to resonate with what matters to them and their pain points.

The key to a successful memoir is authenticity, no matter how painful it is. Your story should be genuine, reflecting the real you and how you overcame obstacles to rise above the crowd. Over the years, I’ve honed my storytelling skills to deliver emotional appeal in memoirs. The one inevitable truth is that emotions drive a book. By bringing the emotional elements in your story front and center on the page, you create a lasting impact and transcend a legacy.

If this sounds like a lot of work, I assure you that it is. And this is where I, as a ghostwriter, come into the picture. As a ghostwriter, I love writing memoirs for people whose astonishing stories contain even more extraordinary lessons. When people need help writing remarkable rags-to-riches memoirs, where the rags don’t always mean being broke or failing in business, they turn to me.

Many authors want clarity and relief from the pain caused by spiritual, emotional, and physical events in their lives. So, my role is to deliver that healing by listening with empathy and compassion, spurring your thoughts, unearthing hidden memories, and transforming them into written words.

It’s not always straightforward. And, in truth, it won’t be easy. The things you want are on the opposite side of fear. But coming out on the other side requires courage, tears, and reliving the pain.

Working with me, I know how to ask questions to unearth stories that will bring clarity, understanding, and healing. While storytelling is the best way to convey business lessons you’ve learned over the years, a memoir is the best way to display your courage and experience to help others overcome the challenges they have in their lives.

This is the stuff legends are made of.
