Unspoken Ghostwriter Roles Impacting Leadership Book Narratives.

Unspoken Ghostwriter Roles Impacting Leadership Book Narratives.

By Jeffrey A. Mangus

As a nine-year veteran ghostwriter, I see every day how busy executives face an ever-increasing demand to communicate their ideas in books. Whether they want to admit it, many find it hard, sometimes impossible, to articulate a clear vision of what they want to say onto a blank page.

In reality, many business leaders find it impossible to maintain their business and personal lives while writing projects, such as books, articles, and speeches.

As a business book and thought leadership ghostwriter, I assist leaders in crafting their books by capturing their voices, ideas, and experiences, weaving them into compelling narratives that resonate with audiences. By utilizing this process, leaders can feel empowered and confident in effectively expressing their vision to the world.

But why would you, as a business leader, opt to hire me or any ghostwriter?

The answer is simple: time. Many leaders lack the time, patience, or know-how to sit down and write a professional book. Writing a book can be time-consuming and disrupt running an organization, making critical decisions, and tackling complex challenges. Hiring a ghostwriter can free up this time, allowing you to focus on your core responsibilities and be more productive.

In ghostwriting, I silently shape the words and sentences, becoming the invisible force that guides the story without the reader’s awareness. It’s a demanding and fulfilling endeavor that commands skill, dedication, and humility. However, apart from writing, I simultaneously perform a few unseen, even hidden, roles and specific skills as a ghostwriter.

Here are five:

Interviewing is a skill I possess.

Being an expert writer.

I am a project manager.

I pose as a therapist.

Be an empathic listener.

Strong Interviewing Skills

As a skilled interviewer, you can share your insights with me as your ghost without sacrificing your core responsibilities. With the help of a professional writer, you can turn your ideas into polished writing while managing your daily responsibilities.

Expert Writing

Not all visionary leaders have a natural talent for writing, as I know as a writer. While specific individuals may thrive in strategy, innovation, or leadership, writing requires innate and distinct skills. As a ghostwriter, I use my empathic ability to combine your executive expertise with my nine years of literary prowess and storytelling skills. The outcome of this collaboration is a series of books that present your complex ideas in a relatable and engaging manner.

Project Manager Role

With my experience completing many book projects, I am well-versed in planning, executing research, and understanding how book publishing works. I have a good understanding of what publishers require, including their deadlines and non-negotiables. Although senior business executives are knowledgeable in their fields, they often need a sense of writing projects and publishing processes. Senior executives and celebrities are too busy to handle project management responsibilities.

Like many ghostwriters, I am an influential strategist for book projects. I oversee a systematic and well-designed process. Following your book outline and concept, I meet deadlines and revise as needed, ensuring completion, finalization, and successful publication. Ghostwriting projects involve many nuts and bolts, but despite the give and take, I have the authority to manage and guide the process, ensuring your book’s successful publication.

Pseudo-Therapy Role

Although I’m not a certified therapist, in my ghostwriter role, I often end up being the go-to confidant, stepping into the role of the author’s pseudo-therapist. It’s satisfying and leads to life-long friendships as we share personal and private feelings, emotions, and events. When busy executives and leaders enlist a ghostwriter, they often feel uncertain about the process and whether their story is worth sharing. As a professional, I am here to answer questions that arise during our writing processes. With collaboration and writing, I often must provide much support, listen attentively, offer reassurance, offer confidentiality, have an open ear, and trust entirely in you as the client and your story.

Empathic Listener

Empathetic listening skills are one of my most valuable qualities as a ghostwriter. Despite not having professional therapy qualifications, I possess the personality traits of patience, attentive listening, empathy, effective communication, and strong social skills. Building trust is at the heart of my ghostwriting collaborations, allowing my authors to confide in me beyond the book’s boundaries.

Before my career as a ghostwriter, I never realized the importance of empathy in my career skill set. However, I’ve always had a heart for helping others, so understanding others is crucial for creating engaging and believable book narratives. While some stories, like memoirs, require it, business books are more straightforward and rarely require it. Still, there has been a shift in business books, which are story-driven, showing the leaders’ expertise and what they went through to overcome the challenges. This is where you, as a leader, may need professional handholding so I can do what’s necessary to deliver your story to the best of my ability.

As your ghostwriter, my many roles, besides being your writer, will be vital in helping you, as a leader, bring your vision with clarity and impact. With my skills as a professional writer, I will accompany you on the journey, guiding you to overcome time limitations and emotional gaps and effectively share your story with a larger audience. As the demand for thought leadership books grows, visionary leaders like you can rely on ghostwriters like me to shape how ideas are shared and influence conversations globally about you and your leadership, increasing the prevalence of future business partnerships and legacy.
