The Price a Leader Pays by NOT writing a Hybrid Leadership Memoir

The Price a Leader Pays by NOT writing a Hybrid Leadership Memoir

By Jeffrey A. Mangus

After writing my first book in 2017 and after losing my left leg below the knee, my life changed in every way. I had direction. I found a purpose. Once I began writing, facing my doubts and fears and the blank page, I soon saw the power of words to help me heal from the trauma my mind and body were going through. Once I wrote and published that book, I couldn’t imagine my life without it. It’s the same as imagining my life without food or water. It doesn’t work. The book wasn’t only a milestone, but also a point of trajectory into another world and life I never imagined. I am glad I wrote it, leaving everything on the table without regret.

The decision to forgo a hybrid leadership memoir book can negatively impact your business. There are many drawbacks to your leadership without a book in your toolbox. Based on my research and personal experience, books are crucial for a company’s long-term success. Books are a vital component in almost every leader’s business and life. And by not writing a business book, you may experience several notable disadvantages.

Here are just a few:

Loss of valuable leadership insights:

If you don’t document and share your leadership experiences, future generations or individuals who could benefit from them may miss valuable insights and lessons learned. By not writing a book, you hinder the chance for aspiring leaders to learn from you and share your knowledge and skill set with the world.

Missed opportunities for personal and professional growth:

Crafting a memoir or book can provide a reflective experience, offering new perspectives on your leadership style and approach. Neglecting this process may cause you to overlook personal and professional development opportunities. Writing a book, especially a hybrid leadership memoir, is cleansing and an organic way to learn more about yourself and strengthen your leadership and personality.

Difficulty in navigating future challenges:

Looking back on previous leadership experiences can offer valuable insights for handling future obstacles and making well-informed choices. Not having a written record of your experiences can make it tougher to apply past lessons to overcome new hurdles. Writing a book offers that time for self-introspection of past mistakes and failures and the rare chance to use those mistakes as a guide to future success.

Missed Authority and Credibility

Writing a book helps solidify your reputation as an expert in your field by establishing expertise. Without a book, you might overlook chances to validate your knowledge and skills formally. Writing a memoir that blends different leadership styles can help you become a respected and thought-provoking leader. Without it, potential followers and peers may miss out and overlook your ideas and insights.

Lack of credibility and influence:

Writing and publishing a memoir or book can enhance your credibility as a leader and expand your influence in your industry or community. Without documenting your leadership journey, you may struggle to make a meaningful impact and motivate others.

With a hybrid leadership memoir, you can reach wider and further among your peers and industry. A book can reach a global audience, spreading your influence far beyond your immediate circle. Not writing a book limits your ability to communicate your ideas on a larger scale.

Inability to leave a lasting legacy:

A well-written memoir or book can serve as a lasting legacy that inspires and educates future generations of leaders. Without this written record, future generations may not remember or celebrate your leadership journey in the same way.

Books, especially hybrid leadership memoirs, have a lasting impact. Books, especially hybrid leadership memoirs, create a lasting impact on readers long after their publication. Not publishing a book could mean that future generations will never see or read your ideas and contributions after you pass away.

Plus, once you’ve written your book, it becomes part of the culture, a small piece of history serving as a permanent record of your thoughts and vision. Without it, your impact can disappear, and you can never see the light of day.

Missed Economic Opportunities:

A book can create additional revenue streams and generate significant income through sales, speaking engagements, and related ventures if launched and written well. Neglecting a business leadership book means missing out on financial benefits and a better business. Many leaders view books as a marketing tool to attract new clients or customers. Without a book, your business growth potential may be limited, and you might miss out on additional income.

Networking and Collaboration:

Expanded networks are always essential in business. Most leaders strive to connect with other influential figures, and the book-writing process opens doors to new collaborations and partnerships. Not writing a book will eliminate many of these networking opportunities. Plus, having a well-written book establishes credibility among your peers: A well-written book can earn respect and acknowledgement from your peers. Without this, you might find gaining the same level of credibility harder.

Leaders who don’t write books face many drawbacks in terms of authority, influence, and personal or organizational development. Not all leaders must write a book to succeed, but doing so can bring multiple advantages that enhance personal and professional leadership.
