The Science of Working with a Ghostwriter
The Science of Working with a Ghostwriter
By Jeffrey A. Mangus
Racing in NASCAR is a dangerous job. One minor mistake can send stock cars flying, create many car accidents, and even be lethal. There are methods behind keeping drivers and cars safe, and it begins with designing driver safety. Since 2001, no NASCAR driver has died or sustained permanent injury in any of its top three series. No author has died from working with a ghostwriter, but many book projects could not be revived and ultimately failed due to a lack of knowledge of the science and complexities involved in a ghostwriter and author cooperation.
One of the fascinating things I love about NASCAR racing is not the speed but the science of how to get to the finish line and be number one. Tire pressure, adjustments, gasoline and aerodynamics, and the power of the human mind are the synergy that makes it all possible. There must be a full one-hundred percent collaboration, a meeting of the minds, and it must all come together to cross the finish line and be a winner.
It all comes down to science.
The same is true for working with a ghostwriter. There is not only a personal side but a science to it, a deep collaboration that must have synergy for the book to see the light of day. One of the deeper aspects of my job as a business memoir ghostwriter is the science and mindset it takes to work with different authors around the globe. Every author is unique, each with individual stories and memories that shaped their lives.
Ghostwriting, and the art and science of working with an author, is a unique and intricate process beyond merely writing ideas and concepts. It is an art form that combines the ghostwriter’s expertise with the client’s vision and message, requiring a symbiotic relationship between the two parties. Science is fascinating, as are the nuances of ghostwriter and author collaboration. Here are some specific scientific principles for a ghostwriter and author collaboration:
Shared Vision: The first and most important stage in a ghostwriting project is establishing a common understanding of the project’s vision and objectives. This shared vision guarantees that the ghostwriter and the client agree on the message, tone, and overall goals.
Fine Art of Communication: Regular and open communication is the foundation of the ghostwriting process. Setting explicit communication guidelines makes it easier to discuss ideas and adjust, ensuring everyone is on the same page.
Listening: Yes, it may sound simple, but as a ghostwriter, listening closely is critical to knowing my authors and where their thoughts and concerns come from. Both the author and the ghostwriter must listen closely to ensure that ideas and narratives are consistent with the author’s vision for the book.
Understanding and Adaptability: Ghostwriters must understand the client’s unique voice and narrative style, making adaptability a key trait. As a ghostwriter, I must study and become one with my author’s voice. It’s a science and a fine dance that takes years to develop. This understanding helps produce a piece that resonates with the client’s identity and meets their expectations.
Research Capability: The science and mechanics of ghostwriting start with the skills and drive to perform deep-dive research, which is part of our essential skills as ghostwriters. The ability to conduct comprehensive research ensures that the narrative work is not only tailored to the author’s requirements but also accurate, informative, and engaging for the target audience.
The biggest and most critical scientific element is the art of capturing an author’s voice. Plus, having the adaptability and skill to adapt to every author’s personality and style. I’ve often said that being a ghostwriter is like being a written word chameleon, and having style versatility with various styles is a must. With every book project, I aim to learn and adapt to different clients and project requirements effectively. This versatility is crucial in capturing the client’s unique voice and conveying their message authentically.
Most don’t realize the deep science and art involved in the iterative writing process of working as a ghostwriter. Ghostwriting is an iterative process involving drafting, reviewing, and revising the content multiple times. This iterative approach helps refine the piece to perfection, aligning it closely with the client’s vision.
The most important part of the science of working with a ghostwriter is mutual respect and understanding. A ghostwriter and an author build their relationship on mutual respect and understanding. Recognizing each other’s expertise and contributions is essential for a synergy and successful book collaboration.
Ghostwriting is an intricate and collaborative effort blending the ghostwriter’s writing skills with the client’s vision. It requires clear communication, mutual understanding, and a shared commitment to the project’s objectives. By following these principles, both the client and the ghostwriter can navigate the ghostwriting process, resulting in a book that has an impact and one that truly resonates with the intended audience.
